Amanda Kimberley The Fast Still Life

The Fast of Still Life is a conglomerate ofstruggles, triumphs, epiphanies, and freedoms of life discovered through the art of the written word. Life may seem still at times while trudging throughit, but looking back, it seems to go by faster than the blink of an eye.I hope you enjoy these pictures of how I perceive life.

Schneider Norbert Still Life

A reflection of the customs, ideas, and aspirations of the time via still lifes. The still life, the most primordial of painting subjects, had its peak between the late Middle Ages and the 17th century. In this book, Norbert Schneider explores the still life's insights into changes of mentality and philosophy as well as its role in the history of scientific discoveries and the gradual replacement of the medieval concept of the world. About the author: Norbert Schneider (b. 1945) is Professor of Art History at the University of Karlsruhe. His research focuses on art history of the Middle Ages and early modern times (and the history of genres of painting) the methodology of art studies, and the history of philosophy. His numerous books include TASCHEN's The Art of the Portrait: Masterpieces of European Portrait Painting, 1420-1670 and Jan Vermeer: The Complete Paintings.

А.Г. Костеневич The Hermitage: Western European painting of the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries

THE HERMITAGE, one of the world's biggest treasuries of Western European art, already had a wide reputation outside Russia last century. It was renowned mainly for its collection of sixteenth to eighteenth century paintings, having very few nineteenth century works; these for the most part were amassed in the Museum after the October Revolution. From that time the Hermitage also began to acquire paintings by foreign artists of the twentieth century.

Michael Kuhn The Global Social Sciences . -Under and Beyond European Universalism

The European social sciences tend to absorb criticism that has been passed on the European approach and re-label it as a part of what the critique opposes; criticism of European social sciences by "subaltern" social sciences, their "talking back", has become a frequent line of reflection in European social sciences. The re-labelling of the critique of the European approach to social sciences towards a critique from "Southern" social sciences of "Western" social sciences has somehow turned "Southern" as well as "Western" social sciences into competing contributors to the same "globalizing" social sciences. Both are no longer arguing about the European approach to social sciences but about which social thought from which part of the globe prevails. If the critique becomes a part of what it opposes, one might conclude that the European social sciences are very adaptable and capable of learning. One might, however, also raise the question whether there is anything wrong with the criticism of the European social sciences; or, for that matter, whether there is anything wrong with the European social sciences themselves. The contributions in this book discuss these questions from different angles: They revisit the mainstream critique of the European social sciences, and they suggest new arguments criticizing social science theories that may be found as often in the "Western" as in the "Southern" discourse.

Ali Kiani Around the World in Seven Acts

The seven plays in this collection, dealing with various subjects and issues, are arranged in chronological order - from Sidewalk Gurus, set in India in the late 12th century to The Storytellers, set in Iran in the early 20th century. These Plays, although different in settings, subject matters, characters and religious beliefs, present indigenous dramatic elements which have played an important part in the cultural life of the non-Western countries. In writing these plays, which are set in different historical, religious, and cultural backgrounds, I tried to show how topical and relevant the subjects and themes - arranged marriages, woman's rights, tribal wars, the caste system, family relationships, and western impacts - are to the contemporary society. Some of the subjects in this anthology are drawn from popular, literary, religious and historical sources. The Golden Canary was inspired by Japanese Kyogen (comic interlude), Return of the Shadows by Turkish Karagöz (shadow-puppet theater), The Storytellers by Persian Naqqali (storytelling), and Three Wishes by The Arabian Nights (or A Thousand and One Nights). Sidewalk Gurus focuses on the Indian caste system; Lost in the Bush is based on slavery and tribal wars; and The Way of Yu Pay-foo depicts family relationships and Western influence. The traditional non-Western theater forms have declined since the 19th century in favor of Western-style Theater. Rituals, festivals and masquerades are still performed in some parts of...

Cold War Cultures. Perspectives on Eastern and Western European Societies

The Cold War was not only about the imperial ambitions of the super powers, their military strategies, and antagonistic ideologies. It was also about conflicting worldviews and their correlates in the daily life of the societies involved. The term "Cold War Culture" is often used in a broad sense to describe media influences, social practices, and symbolic representations as they shape, and are shaped by, international relations. Yet, it remains in question whether - or to what extent - the Cold War Culture model can be applied to European societies, both in the East and the West. While every European country had to adapt to the constraints imposed by the Cold War, individual development was affected by specific conditions as detailed in these chapters. This volume offers an important contribution to the international debate on this issue of the Cold War impact on everyday life by providing a better understanding of its history and legacy in Eastern and Western Europe.

Ali Hina Muslims in western Europe. Problems of Integration

Nearly 40 million Muslims reside in the European Union and adherents to Islamic religion now constitute the largest minority group and the second largest religion of European society. Most of the Muslims reside in the Western European countries where they immigrated during 1960's and 1970's. Their descendants who comprise the second and third generation Muslims, born and raised in Europe now constitute a sizeable population. Although issues regarding integration started in the 1970's as Britain changed its immigration policies during that time but second and third generation Muslims became a permanent feature of European society. After 9/11 situation changed as immigration and terrorism were linked and after EU's involvement in war against terrorism issues concerning extremism and fundamentalism became of vital importance and issues of Muslim integration emerged.

Still Life Before

This eloquent and generously illustrated book asserts that artists were fascinated by and extremely skilled at still life significantly earlier than previously thought. Instead of the genre beginning in the early 17th century, noted scholar David Ekserdjian explores its origins in classical antiquity and the gradual re-emergence of still life in Renaissance painting. The author presents a visual anthology of finely executed flowers, fruit, food, household objects, and furnishings seen in the background of paintings. Paintings are reproduced in full and paired with detailed close-ups of still-life elements within the work. Ekserdjian further examines both the artistic and symbolic significance of a chosen detail, as well as information about each artist's career. Featured works include radiant paintings from Renaissance greats such as Da Vinci, D'rer, Holbein, Michelangelo, Raphael, and Van Eyck, as well as the work of less-celebrated masters Barth'lemy d'Eyck and Ortolano.

An O. E., G. P. A. Fildes Iron Times With the Guards. Experiences of an Officer Coldstream Guards on Western Front During First World War

An indispensable account of the Western FrontThere are several accounts of the experiences of men during the Great War which have been recognised as exceptional, have been highly acclaimed and have entered the ranks of classic war literature. There are many more eyewitness accounts of more humble literary reputation which are nevertheless still invaluable as historical chronicles. These inevitably become-in most cases-less well known. Rarely does one discover a work-probably unknown to many-that is all one could hope for as a memoir of a life lived during wartime but which at the same displays the craft of penmanship, the sensitivity, creativity and depth of observation of places, events and personalities that defines great writing. This book-the experiences of an officer of the Coldstream Guards on the Western Front-is such a book. Scenes of life behind the lines, in the trenches and during the assault of battle are graphically related making it a truly indispensable volume for anyone interested in the war the infantry knew. Highly recommended.

Bernd Kappenberg Setting Signs for Europe. Why Diacritics Matter European Integration

More than 20 years have passed since the introduction of the Universal Character Set. However, legacy applications still cannot even render German umlauts correctly. Part of this problem is a hidden political agenda: Consciously or unconsciously, patterns of the Cold War are continued in the interaction between Western and Eastern European languages. This book examines the current use of diacritical marks in Western Europe, such as the use of names from Slavic languages in electronic data processing systems. The role of the media as multiplier receives particular attention, with most error examples taken from actual media coverage.Considering international, EU, and national law and referring to landmark court decisions, Kappenberg answers the question: 'Is there a right to diacritical marks in people's names?' This is followed by a description of current practice in several European countries. Finally, Setting Signs for Europe answers the question how in the framework of the EU's multilingualism policy, effective approaches can be created to raise awareness among software vendors, the media, government agencies, and individuals regarding the correct handling of diacritics. Kappenberg also assesses the use of diacritics as a style element and offers an improved input method for diacritics.

The author is a lifelong resident of Western New York, living with his wife and four children and four grandchildren. An avid reader since childhood, he is also a trivia freak, history buff, and collector of eclectic Depression-era relics. He loves a good story, whether it’s his own or one told by another. He relishes life in the slow lane, believing the journey is as important as the destination. Among his favorite authors are Louis L’Amour, Stephen King, and Robert Frost, although he still cherishes a fond nostalgia for “See Spot run!” and Dr. Seuss.
